Who needs Visitors to Canada insurance?
Visitor medical coverage is intended to help with eligible, unexpected medical emergencies for people visiting Canada who do not have access to regular provincial coverage. It may be suitable for tourists, visiting relatives, some new arrivals waiting for coverage and eligible returning Canadians—subject to each policy’s eligibility language.
A relative arriving at Toronto Pearson and staying with family in Brampton should arrange coverage with accurate dates and medical history. Do not assume OHIP covers a visiting family member.
What can visitor medical insurance cover?
- Eligible emergency hospital and physician services.
- Diagnostic tests and ambulance expenses when medically necessary and covered.
- Emergency prescriptions and related treatments, within plan limits.
- Emergency assistance and repatriation, where included.
- Optional coverage for stable pre-existing conditions, where the plan permits.
Routine checkups, planned treatment and non-emergency care are usually excluded or limited. Benefit caps and definitions vary significantly.
When to buy coverage
Buying before the traveller enters Canada may avoid certain waiting periods that can apply after arrival, depending on the plan. Always confirm the actual effective date, exclusions, waiting periods and whether an extension is permitted. A policy purchased after symptoms appear generally does not retroactively cover those symptoms.
Visitor insurance versus Super Visa insurance
A standard visitor-medical plan may allow different minimum limits and durations, depending on eligibility. Super Visa applications have specific federal minimum insurance requirements. If your traveller is applying for a Super Visa, use Super Visa insurance rather than assuming a shorter visitor policy is sufficient.
How to choose an appropriate plan
- Compare actual coverage limits, including the insurer’s maximum payable amount.
- Match your traveller’s ages, citizenship/residency and arrival dates to eligibility.
- Evaluate the stability requirements for diabetes, blood pressure, heart conditions and other histories.
- Check deductible options, exclusions, claim contacts and reimbursement procedures.
