What IRCC requires from a Super Visa policy
As of October 2026, qualifying coverage must include health care, hospitalization and repatriation, provide at least CAD $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, and be valid for at least one year from the date of entry. A paid-in-full policy or a policy paid in instalments with a deposit may be accepted; an insurance quotation by itself is not sufficient. The insured should carry proof at each entry and maintain valid coverage while in Canada.
Coverage can come from Canadian insurers or certain approved insurers outside Canada that meet IRCC’s published requirements. Check the official document rules before relying on an overseas insurer.
How to compare your parents’ insurance options
- Age and travel dates: enter each parent’s accurate date of birth and intended start date.
- Policy limit: compare at least $100,000 and consider whether a higher limit suits your risk tolerance.
- Deductible: a larger deductible can reduce the premium but increases potential out-of-pocket expenses.
- Medical-history eligibility: review any stable-condition option and the insurer’s stability period.
- Payment method: compare full payment versus approved instalment terms, if offered.
- Refund rules: find out what happens if a visa is refused or travel dates change.
Where the cheapest policy can go wrong
A policy with a lower initial premium might exclude an unstable medical condition, apply a longer waiting period, use a substantial deductible or restrict cancellations. Conversely, a more expensive policy is not automatically more suitable. Compare effective protection and the definitions in the insurer’s wording before choosing.
Super Visa or regular visitor insurance?
Super Visa coverage must meet specific immigration criteria. A regular visitor-medical policy may be appropriate for other visitors, but its coverage limits and duration do not automatically satisfy the Super Visa requirement. Read our Super Visa versus visitor insurance comparison.
